as suggested this is called hidden city ticketing and not uncommon. Airlines do not like it and it can create a problem. Once you skip a segment, the rest of the ticket will be cancelled -- so unless the last segment, it will not work. Also if done regularly the airlines may take some action.
So if the price is sufficient different. Consider a separate LAX-SFO-LAX ticket (usually $150 or less). Yes, more flying but maybe cheaper.
The other option is OW tickets, were you skip the last leg -- but sometimes OW tickets, especially international are more expensive then RTs.
Thanks for the quick replies! Never knew this existed, and interesting to note that is some dispute as to whether this is legal or not...
The fact that this is international makes it trickier. I thought it would have been easier as I wasn't sure if I had to check in separately for the domestic and international legs of the flight.
I guess an option would be to use some miles that I have on Southwest and fly down to LAX from SF, but this will incur significant travel time...
