Tried that, did not work for me,at least as of a year ago. Went through the entire reservation process (glacial compared with online booking) and at the end the CSR said "no can do" so we split the reservation. Thankfully the pre-assigned E+ seats did not get messed up and there were no irregular ops.

Not that difficult, IMO to basically split the discount among several people.
This was a post-merger $300 cert that would have discounted 1 ticket (for 1 traveler) on UA metal but was told nobody else could be in the record.

Last week I was able to book a reservation using e-certs and two people. We each had an e-cert applied to the reservation. So I believe this issue is fixed, at least for me it was.
