Air India believe it or not was a good airline - one of the gems of the country when run by Ratan Tata until 1975 when Indira Gandhi nationalised it. Singapore Airlines was modeled after Air India as the benchmark and even thought of buying it and luckily decided against it in the late 1990s.
The inefficiency leads to horrendous waste and starvation. 40% of all generated electricity is wasted.

It is amazing how a country could have a disastrous-run airline like Air India, but also produce talents that built one of the nicest budget carrier ever. I would highly recommend everyone to give IndiGo a try and I believe the airline has some international destinations including Bangkok which was voted the number 1 destination amongst Indians.
