Because you booked a fare on a different airline. That is what a codeshare is. You're on a US flight number and it's a US flight. It's clear the merger is not fully integrated yet, and they made it pretty clear that reciprocal elite benefits have not been implemented with respect to upgrades. That $100 probably wasn't worth it.
