So from reading the Q&A and this thread, it sounds like the overall answer is, "it depends" on what happens if you make changes to an award ticket that is already booked.

Right now I'm booked ATH-MUC-YUL-BOS in August. If I find an easier routing such as ATH-MUC-BOS, will this require more miles?
