I would mostly agree with the other posts.
On the left is definitely more interesting for landing. You probably won't see the city but you'll get a nice view along the shore of the peninsula, along with the hills behind it. You'll also have something in your visual reference to cause the feeling that you're landing on the water, since the runways begin right up against the edge of the bay. (On the right, you might get a view of the Bay Bridge, but it'll mostly be the bay with smaller communities in the distance. Not as interesting.)
Most of the time, the arrival path has you flying over land in near complete darkness with the Bay Area lighting the way in the far distance. It can be kind of breathtaking when you get close.
In normal conditions, with flights taking off the from 1's, there isn't much of a view from either side. You might see the city from the left, but it will be brief. However, it's fairly frequent that transcon flights will take off from the 28's, especially if there's even a moderate amount of wind. In that case, the flights will usually fly just offshore of the city, so you'd definitely want left.
Thus, the short answer: Always pick left.
