Your understanding is incorrect. In 2012, AA announced that "up to half" of the 763 fleet would get new lie-flat, all-aisle access J seats. Perhaps you've found the seat map for the refurbished 763s.

AA's first 787 isn't due for delivery until late 2014, so if you're looking at a seat map for a June flight, it's not a 787.
