Hello danapop -- You must have done this quite a while back. I fondly remember those low prices in the year 2000 when heading to BOB for the 1st time as part of a Millennium Extravaganza. Actually today's price is USD $501 round trip based on the XPF(EUR) to USD exchange rate.
OP -- Since then, I've been back to French Polynesia every few years, discovering a new archipelago every time. I was just there in May last year (Marquesas) and booked again for the coming October (that's why I knew how much the R/T was today, as I just bought the ticket a few weeks ago).
Why have I been back 7 times? Because there is nary a more amazing experience than to float on a turquoise lagoon gazing in awe at Mo'orea's surreal dinosaur ridges or its mountain with a hole in it (Mouaputa)... and then you have Bora Bora, the poster child for what an island should be.
Of course, the Holy Trinity is Tahiti, Mo'orea and Bora Bora with the latter two being... yes, the most spectacular islands in our side of the Milky Way. And the overwaters on BOB -- ultra luxury at its most hedonistic, and something to be experienced at least once!

If you'll never get to the South Pacific again, go to BOB if you can, especially if you are so close. The AKL-PPT flight is actually quite short (4hrs + in the air) which is a pittance compared to the DVT inducing distances you are traveling on your other segments.
The area covered by Tahiti and its Islands is about as large as Europe with several archipelagos which are almost entirely different in landscape and culture from each other. If you have limited time, you'll only be able to sample a few islands just in the Society archipelago.
