there was a very good tour guide mentioned somewhere (I think I got it from FT) and on tripadvisor they had 300+ 'excellent' ratings (and no ratings less than that).

I would do some research and find a good guide, make contact with them, and book their time, but perhaps with a flexible itinerary.

That way if there is any potential hop-spot you can go somewhere else. I've heard the pyramids are basically empty now - no tourists at all. So you might want to go there if the city is off limits.

The guide will make sure you stay out of trouble!
