The old paradigm was based on the fact that removing 1 business seat allowed for adding 3 coach seats. DL figured out that given the relative load factors, they would come ahead trying to sell business seats.

Today DL is moving towards replacing a business seat with 6, maybe more coach seats and the mathematics is now in favour of selling coach seats.
