My best recollection is they gave me a dashboard card. I really doubt if they would tow you over not having a card one night, but that is a prediction not a guarantee.
I'm kind of lost in your schedule, but there is one stray rental lot literally across the street, so maybe you don't need an overnight car at all. (I think it's National but it has been awhile).
Ok 4 nights in Maui, arrive 1st night Sun @ 11pm , no need for a car.Leaving Thurs @ 10am so need for a car Weds night. Have $$ off certs for the car on Mon (Avis) then Tues & Weds used HZ pts. 1 night to catch a luau show somewhere. I think returning the car to HZ and taking it out again is more of a hassle then just keeping it. 1 day will be set aside for the beach and snorkling. So staying by the CY works well for this trip.
I do agree if a person is simply gonna be staying on site most of the time then the CY is good for late arrivals into OGG and early departures and its best to get to your resort straight away
