I use my miles primarily for flights to India as I have relatives there and need to see them. I consider this an essential trip, one for which I would pay so, I base my valuations on the cost of trips to India.
I don't invest much in hotels as very often one can get a room for $100/night which is a smaller savings compared to my India flights.
