Question Connecting in SIN; possible to stopover?

Next year we're planning a trip which will take us from Canada to Japan and both New Zealand and Australia.

We're looking at flying into SIN from Japan, probably on SQ635 from HND, arriving at 12.35pm on a Friday afternoon.

Our intent is to continue on to Auckland, either direct on Jetstar or via Australia on QF. (The non-stop SIN-AKL QF flight is too expensive!) on Sunday evening. (Rather than trying to connect the same day we are looking at staying in Singapore for a couple of nights.)

Ideally we'd like to find a reasonably priced hotel with late check-out options but with easy access to shopping.

Right now this is just in the planning stage. Originally we had planned to fly non-stop NRT-AKL on NZ but thought that detouring via SIN for a couple of days might be nice if the price is right and schedules work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
