I wouldnt argue against your knowledge and experience, but "mumbai is infamous for this" sounds bit unrealistic.

Never had or even heard of anyone I know had any such issue in all these decades in mumbai. (had one close to this, on ride from JFK many years ago). I always thought that mumbai was the safest city in India (it is other cities you might have to be careful)

But world is changing...
