I checked out the A380 personal closet for the first time last week, and I agree it is quite nice. If you have something that does not into that closet, you probably shouldn't be carrying it on.
According to this article, GE has a solution to the icing problem for the 748 and 787 in hand. My own sources are saying that the problem is indeed solvable, but it is not as easy as this report implies, and it might take a while for an optimal solution to be implemented.
In the mean time, the GEnx core is pretty robust and functions well as a blender. I personally wound't be afraid to fly the plane in any conditions, but thrust dropouts and the idea of a gas turbine ingesting solid material freaks some people out...
