Could be. There is a very good reason why Hyatt went to all that trouble to send out targeted email to a few Diamonds.

Between the two chains, I need to do a minimum of 48 one night stays/yr on my dime ... I get 2 stay credits/yr with SPG AmEx. I need to do 35-45 one night stays/yr so being able to cut out 3-13 one night stays/yr would be nice. I still have another 5 years before I hit SPG LT Plat; once I do that, I won't need to do frivolous trips/mattress runs.
Why do I want top status with multiple chains? Because I'm an airline pilot so while my company paid stays don't count toward status, most hotels (except Hilton) extend lounge access to me for being top tier. I've already got Marriott LT Gold (close to LT Plat) so I don't need to chase Marriott status since there's not much additional benefit for me. I'm simply working on accumulating MR points through the credit card.
As far as the actual number of people who will be offered Diamond for as long as they have the credit card, the number could be anywhere from a handful to somewhere in the low thousands. There are many people who read FT and travel blogger websites without posting so it's hard to say how many people read about this. And then there are people who never read FT and blogs who may have applied for the credit card. I don't think we'll ever have an accurate number of how many people got the email and applied for the card.
As painful as this is for me to say, congratulations to everyone that got the offer and took advantage of it. I'm jealous of you.

I may buy a house in next 6 month. I am not sure if I should apply more CC at this point.
Why not try and apply? Btw, did you qualify Diamond traditionally, through Challenge, and how many nights/stay did you conduct in the past year? I ask this because you are the profile that Hyatt targeted.

But as a current cardholder, when I read posts about those who piggybacked and still potentially could get it...

LOL!

Frustrating and somewhat of a slap in the face to those of us who follow the rules and show our loyalty to Hyatt.
I want to point out a fact that some have posted about Lifetime Diamond given out with the Hyatt cc erroneous targeted email. It is not Lifetime Diamond given out here. FD1971 makes a good point that Lifetime Diamond is a higher service level experience. The only way to achieve Lifetime Diamond is through actual spend (1,000,000 base points, and 10 years membership).
The credit card offering Diamond doesn't bother me in the least bit. Specific Diamonds were targeted and rewarded. My goal in the long term with the Hyatt Gold Passport program is to spend enough to achieve Lifetime Diamond. There is no doubt I'll be towing the line, and staying 50+ nights per year for the next ten years. The more our family stays at Hyatt, the more benefits we reap. The carrot is indeed the Lifetime Diamond status and no less.
