The Chase United Explorer and Club cards have trip cancellation insurance that will rebate the UA service charge ($50) but you must work with their insurance carrier as well as follow the UA process for medical refunds of change fees.

I changed an itinerary for two in July for medical reasons and paid the $500 change fee. I was not aware that the fee was refundable for medical reasons. I can get supporting documentation, but I'm not sure that United would be very responsive after 4 months. Does any one know of a time limit on this item?
I do not think it is too late, but that is just my opinion. Just follow the procedures on the website.
