In Windows? Alt+PrintScreen will take a screen shot of the current active window and save it to the clipboard so you can paste it into any program.
The Snipping Tool will let you select any part of the screen and save to an image file or the clipboard. To get it, go Start-> and type "snipping tool" or go into All Programs->Accessories->Snipping Tool.

gfunkdave for making me aware of the snipping tool - easy to use, simple, there where you need it.... how un-Microsoft!
