Partially agree that i don't blame the airline exactly for the extra step as I think its a necessary inconvenience if i purchased tickets on someone's behalf.

I partially disagree that airlines don't get the blame as PR (during a trip just this Q2) did request for me to show the credit card even when i purchased the tickets with the verified feature. I had to show the card when i took the flight and then have to show the card for another booking which i purchased on behalf of family members. (they flew at a later date and time so i had the gentleman at the counter note that the card be verified; they did not get asked for the card when its their time to fly).
