I am a long time 1k and million miler and I've been "not helped" by United so many times that I have lost track.
Also, if his two flights happen not to be on the same record, there are United agents out there who will try to collect penalty charges.
It's good that you have had better experience, and I hope for the same for the OP who, for all we know, is Global Services member -- the only category of United customer who can reliably count on assistance.
I am not implying that United is necessarily any worse than any of the other large domestic carriers in this regard. All too often, particularly on domestic flights, being treated as human rather than as "self-loading cargo" is, unfortunately, an unrealistic expectation.

It appears that your hotel is near the MacArthur station. There is a direct train from there to SFO airport, takes about an hour. If you leave your hotel at about 6:30 you should be fine for a 10:00 flight. Check with your hotel front desk about advise on getting to the BART station.
This is the most cost-effective way. But at the risk of being again accused of upsetting the OP unduly, I note that there could be a BART strike starting as soon as October 11.
