It is an iCal feed - the device downloads it, stores it as a calendar and then TripIt has nothing more to do with it until new events arrive, which it adds to the feed.
You can get the data in the ical feed, and subscribe to it in your calendar or in the tripit app itself, or both ways.
If you have a wifi connection at the airport or in the hotel, you can update the data on the road.
I make sure the app and the calendar apps etc are all updated before I leave on a trip, in case I end up with no data connection.
