I, along with the vast majority of non-airline apologists and contract law, agree with you. Once you've paid them you've made a contract (as MatthewLAX's post shows).

In terms of what can you do, if UA won't fix it before traveling, I think you'll have to pay. Once you pay, you can dispute it with your credit card company (you have a valid contract that UA did not follow and overcharged you). Alternatively, you could go to small claims court to recover the additional payment.
