From Playa del Carmen it's not difficult to visit the archaeological zone of Cobá. Not so much visited as some of the others, but it's extensive and makes you feel like Indy Jones. (Best to go early morning - it can get quite hot after noon.)

Lunch could once be had at the nearby Villa Arqueológica, but unfortunately they have closed. Maybe the Hotelito Sac-Bé?
