Instead, push Tulum off to Thursday, and spend Wednesday enjoying your time on the beach at PDC, perhaps snorkeling or other watersports. This also gives you an extra day to allow for a rain-day-out.
Alternatively, spend Thurs. at Xcaret eco-park, or Xel-Ha. You can buy full day, all inclusive packages for these either in advance or once you're in PDC. Or just spend a half day there. If you really want to see an island, perhaps Cozumel would be fun--certainly closer to PDC than Mujeres.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I realize Isla Mujeres was far and out of the way but the beauty of it is really attracting. Probably a 2 hour trip in and out. We are still debating about those parks, I feel they are a bit too touristy.

If you want a different overnight excursion that makes it easy and convenient to get to Chichen Itza early, take the ADO bus directly from Playa to Vallodolid the afternoon before and experiece an authentic colonial Mexican town. Did you guys exchange currency in your home towns? I'm coming from Boston so I was told to exchange for pesos at Logan.
My hotel offers $50/day all inclusive option. I'm considering it for 3 days when I'm not visiting Chichen Itza and Tulum. Thoughts? Will food/drink cost go much over $50 a day? Not going to chug margeritas like water, maybe 3-4 drinks a day I think.
