If you are moving lots of books, USPS media mail is even cheaper than FedEx or UPS, and if packed reasonably well, they won't get damaged at all.

You can also use ropes or tape while bringing boxes to the airport, then take the off at check-in. Take them on board in a carry-on, and just put them on again at baggage claim when you land. I did this with tape when I checked a box, although ropes would probably be better for anything heavy or very large.
