Essentially, that's what people did. It may not be the challenge that you have officially licensed in your head, but it's still a challenge. 'Fly X, Earn Y'
This isn't a challenge, it's a fire sale.
Here's my guess on the outcome. AA does not honor the promotion and gives some token amount of miles (1,000) to appease the masses. The current elites are happy and the slickdeals crowd (aka signed up but didn't actually plan on flying) is happy.
Who would AA rather piss off: people who have shown they are willing to fly AA enough to earn status or those who don't?
