Welcome to FlyerTalk! Good first post.

It's a dilemma, as was pointed out to me when I said I was waffling about continuing to opt out of the scanner. If there is any sort of abnormality or place where the scan software doesn't clearly resolve the image, then you get the patdown. It can be a full patdown.

I don't have any good answers, except that if you fly often and can enroll in GlobalEntry, you can qualify for TSA PreCheck. All of those lines that I have used have been WTMD (Walk-through metal detector) only.
