with the arm rest also sliding out to form the bed- the new pictures of the fully made bed seem to indicate otherwise- which means headspace is reduced

I don't recall that the side part slid down as part of the mechanism. In the linked photo, I think it is just the side part folded down.
You can see in this picture how it actually worked in the old version.
