In this day and age, it's truly shameful that your CU wouldn't allow you to send an email to authorize the fax. They even could have sent you an email to reply back that you authorized the fax. What more proof do they need that you are indeed who you say you are, especially if your email address is on file with them? But I'm glad you didn't have to make another 40 minute trip by car!
Somebody could pretty easily hack an e-mail and ask for a copy of a statement to be sent to some nefarious organization, thus obtaining your account numbers, etc. Seems like the bank is following sound security practices. Frankly, I'd be pi$$ed if my bank would fax a bank statment to any fax # without my hard signature on file.

Although i enjoy it when credit card companies have lax procedures, it's very much the opposite for my bank.
