If they complied with what the TSA wanted to the extent they could at the time of screening, then the failure to have ID should not be a fatal impediment to entering the sterile area. Otherwise that would be in contradiction to
Gilmore v. Gonzales where the district court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held there was no constitutional violation because air passengers could still travel without identification if they instead underwent the more stringent "secondary screening" search. More of this story needs to get out if it is in contradiction to
Gilmore.
