Something to keep in mind about the FA's announcing the flight is full when in the end there turn out to be empty middles. In most instances we are going by what our paperwork tells us for each flight. It shows where that particular plane will be stopping and the pax count when the sheet was printed. Typically the info is given to us at the beginning of our trip. It's not that they are purposely misleading the passengers, but going off old information. The reverse happens as well, we believe the flight won't be full - but then it fills up with standbys.

Oh, definitely understand that. And understand there is so point where less than completely full becomes full (120, 125, 131... out of 137 (old school)) and its just easier to say "completely full" to encourage getting the bags off the middles and people to take them earlier.

And I've heard over and over "you're welcome to take any open seat you see" during the boarding process.

Got to be a hard job with a balance of trying to keep people happy & seated together in the absence of no seat assignments, which I love BTW.
