On the original point - it's valuable to keep accounts open (particularly with fee-free cards) to continue to extend AAoA, whereas an account that's closed has a static impact on AAoA.
Also, sometimes the sign on bonus is no big deal, but the new card's perks are. I PC'd a 14 year old AA Bronze card into a Forward card last year. Gave up $100 in sign up, kept credit history alive/aging and 5x TYP on dine/amazon.
