Not always true. I was on SIN-HKG-TPE itenerary with 55 minutes connecting time. The flight was departed SIN late by 15 min. The captain actually did make a catch up as the flying time was lesser than hat stated in the itenerary. Well I believe the 3h55 flying time has factored in ground delay. When we approached HKG, the flight was asked to hold back.
At the end I only had like 40 minutes to catch my TPE bound flight. We were escorted through "special" channel to the gate. Not only I managed to catch my flight, so did my luggage.
