She doesn't have to know. I face this same dilemma. I have 2 F seats and 2 J seats JFKHKG this summer. Parents in front, kids in back. If an additional F becomes available (and an additional F is still selling) I take one upgrade and hope second becomes available later. If not, kids will take original J seats and when dupe passenger shows up, I explain the situation and offer to let them have my son's seat in F. At no point do I mention possibility of F to kids until it is definite. Perhaps you should consider the same for wife, in your situation?
