They could do this, but airlines increasingly will not interline luggage on separate tickets.

Allow yourself sufficient time to retrieve your luggage at Amsterdam and check-in separately with Etihad, just in case.
Good summary! ^ Essentially, while it is possible, there is no way you can assume that they will. So ask them and hope for the best but you need to have planned for the possibility of a refusal.
