They're probably using slimmer seats. You can move seats closer together, but then shave off the thickness of the back of the seat, and still get the same (or better) knee-room. You do lose some of the legroom under the seat in front of you.
If so, I fear we're headed for a WN [D]Evolve redux.
WN made the same claim, and its new slimmer seats are cramped and uncomfortable.
