FWIW I have been on Int'l flights where nonrevs were instructed to sit in coach for takeoff & landing, then moved to BE at cruising altitude, due to weight & balance. SCL tends to be a heavy cargo route.

I'm not saying this is what happened on the OP's flight, just saying it has happened...and in the situations I witnessed it was done with the full cooperation of the GA, purser & captain.
