There is a very strong motivation to reduce the number of smaller RJs like the 145s and small CRJs - fuel cost. They are extremely inefficient at current fuel prices, and airlines are doing everything they can to get rid of them - which is why aircraft like this are becoming so popular.
I predict we will see a reduction in E145s / CR2s, an increase in Q400s or similar like you mention for the very short segments and more E170/175s used on longer thin routes.
That, and the main reason 50-seat aircraft are so prevalent in the first place is the old CO pilot contract, which is out the door. In fact, with the new contract in place, it behooves United to move as quickly as it can from 50-seat to 76-seat RJs.
