I did receive statement credit a few months ago doing the same thing, for my AAdvantage Visa, immediately when my first statement closed. They classified the purchase as:
AMERICAN AI XXXXX DALLAS TX
For my latest gift card purchase (when doesn't appear to give me statement credit), they classify my purchase as:
AA MISC XXXXXX DALLAS
In February I did the exact same purchases and they were classified exactly like this, so there is nothing new in the classification of the purchases.
Oh, and I did receive statement credits ($100) for both purchases.
