Actually, there was a post on this a while back. You cannot book it as two separate segments, as it violates the minimum connect time. This is regrettable in case the entire flight is unavailable, but both individual segments are available. There is no workaround to that. It has to be booked as the through flight.
Indeed. I posted about this exact situation a few years back in a different thread here. I was on a paid ticket and my partner on an award. The EXP desk tried to ticket it but it was kicked back. AA appealed to CX to open an award seat through HKG-JFK but CX refused (telling AA to cancel my paid ticket and refund the money).
