It is a challenging road in parts to Milford Sound, but much nicer if you can stop along the way at the dozens of little scenic spots, some quite stunning -- which you miss on a bus. And not sure the bus helps with road closure. It is wilderness but not too dangerous. Black ice is a risk but the least of your problems. If you haven't driven in winter (ice/snow) conditions, then this trip is not the place to start.
