So if they don't have what you booked, they don't have to honor it. If they put you in a room that sells for less, I would expect they adjust the rate downward to the rate for the room they give you. Beyond that, I wouldn't be holding my breath for any compensation.
You are correct. Also, by the time one will check in, the previously lower priced room will have become higher due to the hotel being full and there would be no "lower cost" to refund. In fact, they might even consider it an upgrade.
