There is some evidence that this can and does happen. I'd keep on it and check to make sure you are still actually on the waitlist. Don't feel bad about calling or tweeting to keep checking. Maybe they'll actually fix the problem when enough people keep calling.
If you're at the airport day of flight and you believe space is available and the agents don't help, use twitter or the medallion line right away and they should be able to fix it.
