If you cannot take off in a reasonable amount of time( i.e. less than 3 hours) than the aircraft should proceed back to a gate or offloading area.

They were able to deplane the Lufthansa aircraft with the smoking engine (same day), at the deicing pad. No gate was required, airstairs and buses were used. Why was a gate necessary for the AC aircraft?
