Oddly, in my checking, I've so far not seen award space show up on the 747, but I have seen it appear on the 777 SFO-HKG, as well as on one or another JFK-HKG flight. I suspect that the award space I am seeing is a result of cancellations, while the space on the 747 will be opened up as it gets much closer to flight date.

I've seen this as well now. My own checking of CX and QF have shown no award seats, but I was also calling AA regarding other matters, and asked the agent to check for CX F to HKG, and on a few occasions the agent was able to find seats that were not showing on CX or QF. In one case the agent even managed to snag a second seat by using a second PNR. She said that often works when unable to obtain two seats in one PNR.
