I did this a few times. When I paid full Y fare, I got upgraded to C every time. They have 60+ seats in C so chances of getting bumped up is high even when regular Y or Y + is not full
That hasn't happened to me yet and I've been on plenty of flights where Y+ is full. I was surprised to see a 777-300ER flying the route yesterday from HND-LAX. First class seats were free if you were able to score one from C class. Is that the typical config for a Sunday am flight?
