Amana window units

I ran into an Amana window unit that wouldn't go lower than 60 degrees (and the room wouldn't go below about 70 degrees). Also, the fan would shutoff when the thermostat fell below 60 degrees - even though it was set on high. The unit looked like this:



I removed the cover and found the thermostat lead (the black cable), and placed it in a pot of water on the coffee pot. I turned the coffee pot on and it heated the water well above 60 degrees, and the A/C ran all night.
