That's at least how my foreign relatives, friends, and I must admit myself sort of see it. With cocky defined as "a little full of her-/him-self", or self-confident above ones abilities.
And you are right, I would describe the tail by at least two of these words, perhaps even the third one too. So maybe it's fitting.
Well from the content on your post, I wish you well on your transition to United Airlines, and I appreciate the reduced competition for available F for upgrades. And more to your point, one of the things that makes our country great (and what I believe American Airlines is hoping to achieve) is its confidence in its greatness. Personally, I prefer spending my money for products and services that try to be the best, and provide the best value for the dollar spent. American aims to achieve that from this marketing program as Mr. Horton articulates. While you may be part of the populist crowd that finds American exceptionalism annoying, but there is another crowd that is quite proud of our supreme self-confidence, cockiness despite the fact that it may annoy some in our country and around the world.
