As for the tail... well, most of the rest of us around the world have airline liveries that in some way reflect our national flags and/or colours - liveries that clearly enunciate who we are and what country our airlines originate from, often in a tone that matches our national psyches: the low-key elegance of British Airways' Chatham Dockyard livery; the functional efficiency of Swiss' cross; the minimalist simplicity of JAL's rising sun. The US airlines have conversely been terrible at trying to portray the national brand - United's is yawningly non-descript; Delta's was clearly the result of a bored child playing around with a trigonometry set, and neither has anything remotely US-related about it.
The new AA tail - yes, you're right, it certainly is loud. But it's also an extremely apt reflection of the American psyche - bold, brash even, powerful. Embrace it - it's who you are, and it's how the American brand (the nation, not the airline) is perceived around the world. You should be proud of it rather than being the whingers that many of you are on this thread - if you want to whinge about something, then whinge about your appalling airport infrastructure and the pointless theatre that is the TSA.

I watched Mr. Horton's video a second time this morning and noticed something with his body language. When describing the early looks of American Airlines in the first part of the video, he looked confident. At the halfway point, you could see his face brighten and smile widen as he said to get ready for American's new look. We don't know if the Mad Av guys prepped him or not, but he looked very excited to announce more than just the new livery/logo. And it was more than just that. I feel it was truly symbolic that as American Airlines nears the end of its restructuring process, it's time to be, not a normal airline again, but an EXCEPTIONAL airline.
Too much travel correctly points out that the livery/logo is us, proud of our country, now let's extend it to the airline that is American.
