Every airline has a two character alphanumeric code assigned by the international trade association of leading air travel entities. (Same organization that assigns the familiar three-letter codes for airports.). The codes create standardization in the industry.
American's code is AA. United's is UA. Etc.
Southwest's is WN. So, WN is a common abbreviation for Southwest.
